Apiary

Reading time: about 2 minutes

We are a couple of a chinese-speaking environmental scientist and a beer-brewing software developer.

In our spare time we provide a home to and care for a few hundred thousand honey bees. We strive for the best welfare possible of our bees. This is why we continuously improve our skills by increasing knowledge and adjusting our mode of operation.

Location

Our bees live in our garden in the small rural village Forheim in Bavaria/Germany at the southern border of the crater of the Nördlinger Ries (Wikipedia).

Forheim is surrounded by farm fields and almost completely surrounded by forest. There are also some organic orchards with trees carrying apples, pears, cherries, quinces and plums. In spring, the meadows are strewn with dandelions and other flowers. Futhermore, blackberries and blackthorns grow wildly at the boundary.

All of this serves our bees to eventually create a fine composition: our honey.

Bees

Our bees are a country breed, mainly originating from the Carniolian honey bee (apis mellifera carnica). We raise queens ourselves and primarily select them for meekness.

Recently we grew fond of the Buckfast bee (Wikipedia).

Not only we deeply admire the work of Brother Adam who developed this breed, first and foremost we expect them to be less disposed to swarm which would save us really a lot of work.
